The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is bringing food to the war victims. Spokesperson Marwa Awad said on Wednesday that WFP had dispatched 51 trucks of food via Baghdad to the town of Khalidiya. Most of the displaced from Heet are taking refuge there in schools and buildings.
The foods being provided include lentils, wheat, rice and cooking oil. A local charity assists with the food distributions. More supplies are en route from WFP to help the displaced families. Some Iraqis have been uprooted multiple times as the conflict has escalated.
Over 1.8 million people have been forced to flee since ISIS launched attacks earlier this year. Almost half of the displaced have arrived in the northern Kurdistan region of Iraq. Food and other aid is being provided. Kurdistan is also home to refugees from the war in Syria.
Awad says that WFP is seeking more funding to ensure the pipeline of food is maintained. WFP relies entirely on voluntary donations from governments and the public.
