Violence and low funding are starving the Central African Republic

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said today it’s running out of food to feed starving war victims in the Central African Republic (CAR). WFP rice is being blocked at the CAR border with Cameroon. Truck drivers are unwilling to cross the border because of the ongoing violence.

Emergency malnutrition rates among children in South Sudan

The United Nations reported today of soaring malnutrition rates in conflict-torn South Sudan. In Mingkaman, Awerial County 965 children were screened and 13.6 percent were found with severe acute malnutrition and 17.5 percent had moderate acute malnutrition.

WFP desperately needs donations to feed the starving in Central African Republic

UNICEF, WFP respond as hunger devastates Central African Republic

UNICEF said today it’s treating cases of severe malnutrition in the conflict-devastated Central African Republic. Mobile malnutrition units are also being used to increase the capacity to identify and treat cases in small children.

Severe malnutrition can cause lasting physical and mental damage in small children.With food supplies severely disrupted in the country, the threat of malnutrition is widespread.

Another Voice: Americans have a chance to reduce world hunger

Congress will soon be voting on the new farm bill legislation. At that time, funding for programs that fight hunger locally and globally will be decided.

You may have seen in the news the typhoon in the Philippines that left millions without homes and food. In Syria, war has killed children not only because of the fighting, but because of malnutrition caused by the conflict. Food shortages are always the companion of war and disasters. Farming areas are often destroyed in these tragedies.

UN World Food Program director meets Syrian war victims

The UN World Food Program’s (WFP) director, Ertharin Cousin, was in Syria today to meet victims of the brutal civil war. She also held talks with high-ranking government officials about gaining access to hungry Syrians trapped by the fighting.

Cousin visited a WFP food distribution center in Damascus. There she met displaced persons living under dire circumstances, including 32 members of an extended family sharing one apartment.

UN feeds displaced in Central African Republic, urgently needs more funds

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said today it’s feeding displaced persons at Bangui International Airport in the Central African Republic. This was the first distribution of food in three weeks at the airport because of violence in the nation’s capital.

WFP says food will be distributed to all 100,000 people at the airport over the next 10 days. French and African peacekeeping troops are providing security.
