Kenya: refugees malnourished, funding at risk

Over 43,000 victims of South Sudan‘s war have fled to Kenya, but hunger has followed them. A report from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) says that 24 percent of arriving child refugees under five were suffering from acute malnutrition.

UNICEF: Children at risk of starvation in South Sudan

UNICEF sent out a warning today that “tens of thousands of children under the age of five remain at risk of malnutrition-related death in South Sudan.” The war in South Sudan, between the government and opposition groups, has destroyed food supplies and internally displaced 1.4 million people.

War victims from South Sudan have fled by the thousands to neighboring Kenya. These refugees have been receiving life-saving food aid at camps from the UN World Food Programme (WFP). But now tragically those food rations will be cut starting in August.
