This Thanksgiving season take a moment and let your mind wander back to the autumn of 1947. That’s when the Greatest Generation again rose to meet a challenge and help those in need.

They started the tradition of setting aside a plate at the Thanksgiving table for a ‘silent guest,” one of the world’s hungry.

Invite a ‘silent guest’ this Thanksgiving and help people in need

Former Massachusetts Gov. Robert Bradford was a messenger of hope. It was the Thanksgiving season of 1947 and Bradford, a descendant of the Pilgrims, made a special radio address to the nation.

The governor asked Americans to invite a silent guest into their homes for their Thanksgiving meals. This imaginary “silent guest” would be one of the hungry people in Europe.

Parts of Eastern Ukraine denied food aid for months

For the first time in months, food aid has reached Luhansk in the war-torn Eastern Ukraine. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said today a 12-truck convoy arrived in Luhansk earlier this week. The trucks brought rations enough to feed 7,000 people.

Alarming increase in hunger for Ethiopia

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said Monday the number of Ethiopians needing food aid to survive had risen to 8.2 million. This is a rapid escalation in hunger since the beginning of the year, when around 2.5 million were needing food assistance.

Hospital patients, students need food in Ukraine

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said this week it’s started a distribution of food to 7,000 war victims in Eastern Ukraine. Teaming up with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), the food will be given to hospital patients and students.
