My Cincinnati Enquirer column on Charity Miles to fight hunger

During his visit to the United States, Pope Francis was advocating for the new United Nations development goals. The plan is to knock out hunger and poverty worldwide by 2030. It’s what the pope calls the “pillars of integral human development.”

What’s also inspiring is students in the Cincinnati area finding unique ways to help makes these goals a reality. At Mount St. Joseph University, students are using a free app called Charity Miles that supports the U.N. World Food Program (WFP), the lead agency in fighting world hunger.

Put Heart and Mind Into Zero Hunger

Most of us are thousands of miles away from the conflict zones of the world. We can’t physically see the unprecedented number of hungry war refugees.

Surely if you saw these starving people, you would feed them. Even though you cannot see them, let’s not allow them to be out of sight and out of mind.

WFP director calls for dedicated leaders to fight hunger

The director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), Ertharin Cousin, says the end of world hunger is within reach. In a press release issued yesterday, Cousin urged a global movement to reach the goal of zero hunger by 2030.

Norway aids WFP at critical time in Syria, Yemen and South Sudan

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) today announced a donation from Norway to fight hunger in the Middle East and Africa. The NOK 130 million contribution will feed war victims in Syria, Yemen and South Sudan.

U.S. Food for Peace donation saves refugees

The United Nations today announced a life-saving donation from the U.S. Food for Peace program. The US $ 2 million contribution will feed refugees in the African nation of Mauritania. The refugees had fled conflict in neighboring Mali.

School feeding project gets boost in Myanmar

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) today announced an expansion in their school feeding project in Myanmar. Over 227,000 children will now be receiving food at school.

Along with the Ministry of Education, WFP will provide daily snacks of high-energy biscuits, which are vitamin enriched. The biscuits will be distributed in schools located in areas with high hunger rates.

MSJ visitor tells of Syria hunger tragedy

Professor Jeff Hillard’s English class at Mount St. Joseph University had a special visitor this past Saturday, coming from Egypt!

Dina El-Kassaby, a communications officer with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), spoke to the class via Skype. The WFP is the largest global hunger relief organization.
